Business Law Curriculum

This page is not current.

Business Law is an extraordinarily large area of the Valparaiso University School of Law curriculum, bigger even than Tax Law if you consider Business Law in the broad sense, as really a group of areas unified by a significant nexus to the life of a business, whether that business is a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a corporation, or, today, a limited liability company. You might include just about all of Tax Law. You might also include every course from Property Law to Appellate Advocacy, and every subject from employer-employee relations (Labor Law, Employment Discrimination, etc.) to international trading (International Law, International Business Transactions, etc), from high finance (Securities Law, Corporate Finance, Land Transfer & Finance) to bankruptcy (Bankruptcy Law, Debtor & Creditor Rights). The business of America may be business, but something less than the entire curriculum is here meant. Business Law is used here to refer to what might be called core business courses, whose substantive content is relevant to the life of most business organizations regardless of the particular business's particular business. The courses are relevant to a business simply because it is a business. The list may not yet be complete even in a narrow sense, but notice how it already includes multiple separate subject areas, for example, Anti-Trust Law, Banking Law, and Securities Law, areas of specialization in their own right but in which we have only one course.
