Welcome to The Fifth Day Chronicle, an electronic publication of our section of the First-Year Core humanities class "The Human Experience" at Valparaiso University.

This publication gets its title from the so-called fifth-day activities, or Valparaiso Core Activities, that occur outside of class and supplement our class's four meetings per week. Those activities include Valparaiso University's Martin Luther King Day celebration, theatrical performances such as VU productions of Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night and Pucini's one-act operas, and the films Matewan, The Trip to Bountiful, The Postman/ Il Postino and--as part of our unit on work and play--Ferris Buehler's Day Off.

Select from the menu at the left to learn more about Pablo Neruda, Brown University student Cedric Jennings, the town of Matewan, West Virginia, the play on which the film The Trip to Bountiful is Based, the ways in which opera and Shakespeare have recently been performed at VU, and the responses members of our section of the core have made to various Fifth Day activities.
