InterChange Directory
InterChange Discussions are real-time conferences through the Daedalus Integrated Writing Environment. Our class has
begun to use the InterChange model of the Daedalus software in Schnabel 34, thus turning that computer classroom into a
closed network on which we can all "talk" online.
At first, InterChange transcripts may look like drama transcripts, but they don't read like standard dialogue. Unless you are
familiar unfamilar with InterChange or similar "chat" programs, transcripts of such networked discussions can appear
chaotic, with mulitple voices addressing multiple topics in seemingly no coherent order.
By following the header that most InterChange users incorporate at the front of their messages--the name of the person or
people to whom they are speaking--following the threads of discussion can become easier. Some InterChange participants
also incorporate a topic at the front of their messages, which also aids participants and other readers of the transcript in
following the contours of the discussion.
Lastly, any written prompts for the InterChange session can also provide focus for the discussion and the resulting transcript.
Formulating successful discussions online--like formulating successful discusions face-to-face--is a rhetorical art that
improves with practice. Scroll through the transcripts from the directory to your left to see us practicing that art--and happy browsing!
